Formed in 2004, Stillhouse has grown into one of Columbia’s longest-established bands on the local music scene. Drawing from multiple influences, this six-piece ensemble is perhaps best known for its powerful harmonies, improvisational skills, and onstage chemistry. Their sets feature original material woven seamlessly in and out of often-unexpected cover tunes by a wide range of artists from the world of Americana, country, blues, rock, and even 70’s pop. Their passion for live performance is evident at every Stillhouse show: This band not only loves the music they play but they love making music with one another, a combination that has created joyful, dancing audiences for 15 years and counting…

When the rain relented, local band Stillhouse stepped onto the concourse in center field and delivered home run-quality covers of songs by the Dead and other favorites.
“Baseball and the Dead? I can’t think of a better way to spend a Friday night,” said Hallie Jones as she applauded Stillhouse’s cover of the classic “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You).”

Fifteen years is eons in band time. To keep an ensemble as free-ranging as Stillhouse together that long is a milestone worth celebrating, which the band does with this celebration. John and Kari Scollon combine with Jenn McCallister along the front line of this long-running group, presenting a feel-good vibe in their vocals and jam-friendly grooves in line with their Dead-inspired roots.

There is a loose, good-natured quality to the music that Stillhouse makes. Perhaps it is the group’s fondness for classic rock such as The Grateful Dead, or a general attitude that making music ought to be fun for both band and audience. Don’t let the informal presentation fool you, however; singer/guitarist John Scollon and his wife Kari have been playing around Columbia for many years and this may be the best combination of players they have yet assembled.
